SBAI EMEA Committee Member; Portfolio Manager Hedge Fund Investments, Elo Mutual Pension Insurance Company
Mika Jaatinen is a Portfolio Manager of Elo’s Hedge Fund investments. Mika joined Pension Fennia (Pension Fennia and Pension Tapiola merged in 2014) in 2004 as a risk analyst covering Fennia’s capital market investments. Mika became portfolio manager of hedge fund investments in 2007. Mika has also been responsible for equity mutual fund selection in Fennia from 2010 until the merger with Pension Tapiola.
Mika holds an MSc in economics degree from the Jyväskylä University.
Managing Director, External Portfolio Management, CPP Investments
Yan Kvitko is a Managing Director with CPP Investments’ External Portfolio Management (EPM) team. Yan is responsible for the Emerging Manager program globally which pursues investments in early stage hedge fund managers. Prior to joining CPP in 2019, he worked at New Holland Capital where he was a Senior Portfolio Manager responsible for investment research and portfolio management with a focus on quantitative strategies. Yan began his career at Ziff Brothers Investments.
Yan holds a BS in Computer Science from Stanford University and an MA in piano performance from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. He is a CFA Charterholder.
SBAI Trustee; Vice President & CIO, The Rockefeller University
Paula Volent is Vice President and Chief Investment Officer at The Rockefeller University, the world’s leading biomedical research university. Prior to joining The Rockefeller University in August 2021. Ms. Volent served as Chief Investment Officer and Senior Vice President at Bowdoin College, a private, residential college in Brunswick, Maine. At Bowdoin, where she was responsible for the oversight and management of the College’s endowment. Prior to joining Bowdoin in July 2000, Ms. Volent was a Senior Associate at the Yale Investments Office.
Ms. Volent has a BA from the University of New Hampshire; a Master’s Degree in Art History from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University; a Certificate in Conservation from the Conservation Center at NYU, with a specialization in the conservation of works of art on paper; and an MBA from the Yale School of Management. Prior to focusing on endowment management, Paula worked as a paper conservator at the New-York Historical Society, the San Francisco Palace of Fine Arts, the LA County Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. She also ran a private paper conservation studio in Los Angeles, California.
She serves on the Board of Directors of MSCI, Inc.; the Board of Directors of 1st Dibs; a member of the Investment Committee of the Pritzker Family Foundation, a member of the Advisory Board of Girls Who Invest, a Trustee of the Skowhegan School of Art and Painting, and an Investment Committee Member of the Rockefeller Foundation. She is also Vice Chair of the Yale School of Management Advisory Board, a member of the Milken Institute’s Global Markets Advisory Council, a member of the Advisory Board of the Private Capital Research Institute and a member of the National Gallery of Art Investment Subcommittee. In 2020 Barron’s named Ms. Volent as one of the “100 most influential women in U.S. Finance.
SBAI Chair; CEO, Martlet Asset Management
Jane is Chief Executive Officer of Martlet Asset Management responsible for firm strategy, organization and performance. Martlet is based in Newport Beach, CA and was founded in July 2018. The firm’s strategies include alternative risk premia and developing liquid strategies with a focus on fixed income.
Prior to this, Ms. Buchan co-founded and led Pacific Alternative Asset Management Company (PAAMCO), a Fund of Hedge Funds focused on institutional investors for 18 years. Under her leadership first as CEO of PAAMCO and then co-CEO of PAAMCO Prisma, the firm grew to $32 billion AUM placing it third globally in the league tables by the time of her retirement in July 2018 (HFM InvestHedge Billion Dollar Club).
Jane began her career at J.P. Morgan Investment Management in the Capital Markets Group where she was trained in quantitative fixed income portfolio management. She has been an Assistant Professor of Finance at the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. She recently served as chairwoman of the board for the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst Association (CAIA) and is a member of the Advisory Board for the Master of Financial Engineering Program at UCLA Anderson School of Management.
Jane holds both a PhD and an MA in Business Economics (Finance) from Harvard University. She earned a BA in Economics from Yale University. Jane has thirty-three years of experience in investment management and portfolio construction with institutional investors.

Magdalena Högberg, CFA is the Head of Strategic Asset Allocation and Quantitative Analysis at the Fourth Swedish National Pension Fund (AP4) in Stockholm. She has been working at AP4 since 2013 focusing on global equities, hedge funds and asset allocation across asset classes and liquidity spectra.
Ms Högberg holds a Master of Science in Engineering Physics from The Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden and a Master of Science in Business and Economics from Stockholm University, Sweden.
Director, External Investments & Partnerships, New Zealand Superannuation Fund
Rishab is Director, External Investments and Partnerships at the New Zealand Superannuation Fund with responsibilities for external investment manager selection, mandate design and opportunity evaluation.
He has previously worked in asset allocation and corporate strategy roles at the Fund. Prior to joining the Guardians, he was a research economist with the Reserve Bank of New Zealand and has been a research fellow at the Bank for International Settlements.
Rishab has Bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and economics from the University of Auckland and the Australian National University, and Master’s degrees in public administration and finance, from the London School of Economics and Columbia University.
Independent Board Director, NEST
Stuart is an independent Board Director of the National Employment Savings Trust (NEST), the UK Government’s workplace MasterTrust pension scheme. Stuart currently sits on NEST’s main Board and is a member of the Nominations & Remuneration and Customer committees. Stuart also has main Board investment oversight responsibility.
Since 2010, Stuart worked for almost 15 years at HSBC in various roles: as a Board Director and member of the Management Committee of HSBC Global Asset Management Ltd, the c. 3,000 person, c.USD750bn asset manager of the HSBC Group; as the Chief Executive Officer and Board Director of the HSBC Global Asset Management (UK) Ltd the c.400 person, c.USD200bn UK subsidiary; Managing Director responsible for the global oversight of sovereign wealth funds, public pension plans, central banks, development banks and supranationals. Previous roles included: Global Head of Strategy & Chief of Staff; CEO of International Markets; and Head of UK Institutional. Stuart was also the accountable executive for the firm’s global Diversity Equity & Inclusion programme, including 16 workstreams with over 300 volunteers across 14 countries. Stuart was the executive sponsor for the Mental Health & Wellness workstream.
Before that he worked at Insight Investment for 5 years and started his investment management career at Threadneedle Asset Management in 1998. In addition to his executive roles, Stuart has also spent 10 years (from 2014-2024) as a non-executive Trustee Director of the c.£30 billion HSBC Bank Pension Trust (UK) Ltd (HSBC UK Bank’s DB & DC Pension schemes), including being Chair of the Trust’s Investment Committee for 4 years.
Stuart graduated with a BSc honours degree in Chemistry and European Studies (German) from the University of Sussex and the University of Freiburg. He holds: an MBA from London Business School (1997-1999); the CFA Investment Management Certificate; the CFA ESG in Investing Certificate; and the PMI Award in Pension Trusteeship. Stuart is currently on the: Advisory Board of Asset Owner Diversity Charter (representing USD2 trillion of pension scheme assets); the Board & Advisory Council of the UK’s Diversity Project.
Stuart was also a member of the UK Investment Association’s Advisory Council and their Trade & Investment sub-committee. Stuart is married with two daughters. Stuart is also a keen advocate of removing the stigma of metal health in the workplace and society and along with his four brothers raised over £50,000 for mental health charities competing in Marathon des Sables in 2016 (6 marathons in 6 days in the Sahara Desert) which was captured in a charity documentary ‘Brothers in the Sand’, featured on Amazon Prime.
Managing Director & Head of Europe, La Caisse (Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec)
Dame Sharon White is Managing Director and Head of Europe. Based in London, she works closely with asset class managers in the UK, Europe and Montréal. In her role, she represents CDPQ in various markets, as well as with partners, governments, regulators and commercial organizations.
Until September 2024, Ms. White was Executive Chair of John Lewis Partnership, the UK’s largest employee-owned company. From 2015 to 2019, she served as Chief Executive of Ofcom, the UK’s media, telecoms and postal regulator. She began her career in the UK Government as an economist. She held a series of roles including in the UK Prime Minister’s office, the Diplomatic Service and at the World Bank, based in Washington, D.C. She was Second Permanent Secretary at the UK Treasury, overseeing public finances between 2013 and 2015. She has held various non-Executive roles and is currently non-Executive Chair of Frontier Economics.
Sharon was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 2020 in recognition of her contribution to public service. She was named the UK’s most influential black person in the 2023 Powerlist.
She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Cambridge University and a Master’s Degree from University College London.
Asset Management & Investment Funds Policy, Financial Conduct Authority (FCA)
Gavin Haran leads the FCA’s reforms to the UK’s AIFM regime and is also working on institutional investment in private markets.
Prior to this, he worked for the British law firm Macfarlanes and for JP Morgan. He began his career at HM Treasury working on banks during and after the Global Financial Crisis.

Steven Lightstone advises on financial services, securities, and derivatives regulatory issues. His clients include asset managers across a wide range of asset classes and their funds, banks, broker-dealers, fintech firms, payment institutions, institutional investors, insurers, lenders, and market associations. Steven serves as a co-leader of the firm’s global fintech industry team.
Steven earned a BA in Philosophy from the University of Nottingham in 2007, completed the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) at Nottingham Law School in 2008, and went on to obtain his Legal Practice Course (LPC) qualification from the College of Law of England and Wales in 2009.General Counsel, Magnetar Capital
Karl Wachter is General Counsel and a Partner at Magnetar Capital, a $19 billion multi-strategy hedge fund manager with headquarters in Evanston, Illinois. Karl is a member of Magnetar’s Management, Valuation and Operations Committees and is based in its New York office.
Prior to joining Magnetar in 2010, Karl served as General Counsel of hedge fund managers Amaranth Advisors and Diamond Lake Investment Group. Karl began his legal career in 1997 as an associate in the New York office of Clearly Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP.
Karl actively participates in industry trade associations, having served on the board of the Alternative Investment Management Association (AIMA) since 2014, and as its chairman since 2020. He is also a member of the regulatory committee of the Standards Board for Alternative Investments (SBAI).
Karl earned a J.D. with honors from the University of Chicago Law School in 1997, an M.A. from the Elliott School of International Affairs at the George Washington University in 1992, and a B.F.A. with honors from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University in 1988. William Yonge specialises in UK and European financial services law and regulation, an area in which he has more than 20 years’ experience, drawing on his background of working in-house for UK financial services regulators. William concentrates his practice on the investment industry, advising alternative and traditional asset managers and their funds, brokers, corporate financiers, institutional investors, and fintech businesses. William increasingly counsels corporates, financial market participants, institutions, and multinational businesses on the impact of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) and sustainability laws and regulations, including the EU Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation, Taxonomy Regulation, and Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive and their UK counterparts.
William earned a BA in Law with Honors from the University of Durham in England.
Executive Director, SBAI
Thomas Deinet was appointed Executive Director of the SBAI (previously known as the HFSB) in 2008. In 2007, Thomas joined the working group to project manage the development of practice standards proposed by 14 leading international alternative investment managers that led to the establishment of the SBAI.
Prior to joining the SBAI, he was a senior manager at Oliver Wyman, where he extensively worked with major financial institutions in Europe covering asset management as well as corporate and investment banking. Thomas also worked as an analyst in energy trading for a major commodities trading firm.
Thomas is a graduate of the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, with a major in industrial engineering and holds an MSc from Purdue University, USA. Thomas is a CFA charterholder.
MD, Deputy Head of the Portfolio Management Group, BlackRock
Mike Pyle, CFA, Managing Director, is Deputy Head of the Portfolio Management Group (PMG), which encompasses BlackRock's Fundamental and Systematic investing across Fixed Income, Equities and Multi-Asset Strategies, as well as the Private Debt business. Mike is a member of the firm’s Global Operating Committee and GEC Investment Subcommittee.
Mike previously worked at BlackRock from 2014 to 2021, culminating as the firm’s Global Chief Investment Strategist and leading the investment strategy function within the BlackRock Investment Institute (BII). Earlier, he had been the Deputy Chief Investment Officer of BlackRock’s Multi-Asset Strategies and Solutions platform and a portfolio manager on the firm’s Global Tactical Asset Allocation (GTAA) team.
Mike has served extensively in government. Most recently, Mike was U.S. Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economics. In this role, he led the Biden-Harris Administration’s international economic policy efforts and was President Biden’s Sherpa to the G7, G20, and APEC Summits, in which capacity he acted as the President’s principal negotiator with Europe, Japan, and other partners in crafting common approaches to issues such as Russia’s war against Ukraine; global energy, trade, and technology policy; and geopolitical competition with China. Prior to this role, he had been the Chief Economic Advisor to Vice President Harris during the Administration’s first year. Mike also served for five years across a range of international and domestic economic policy roles in President Obama’s White House and Treasury Department. He began his career in public service as a law clerk to then-Judge Merrick Garland of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.
Mike graduated summa cum laude with a degree in economics from Dartmouth College, where he was salutatorian of his class and recipient of the Nelson A. Rockefeller Prize as the top graduate in the economics major. He also holds degrees from Yale Law School and from the University of Cambridge, where he studied graduate economics and law as a Keasbey Scholar.
Head of European Macro Strategy , Balyasny Asset Management
Ben Broadbent is head of European Macro Strategy at Balyasny Asset Management (BAM), a global investment firm that focuses on delivering consistent, alpha-driven returns through a multi-strategy, multi-manager approach. Broadbent joined BAM in June 2025 from the Bank of England, where he served as Deputy Governor for monetary policy from 2014 to 2024, and as an external member of the Monetary Policy Committee for the three years prior to that.
Previously, Broadbent was a Senior European Economist at Goldman Sachs, where he researched and wrote widely on the UK economy and monetary policy. Before that, he was an assistant professor of Economics at Columbia University and an economic adviser at HM Treasury, the UK economic and finance ministry.
Broadbent has a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Cambridge University and a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University, where he was a Fulbright Scholar. Prior to his undergraduate studies, Broadbent spent two years at the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris, earning a diploma in piano performance. He supports Liverpool Football Club and is an enthusiastic but poor cricketer.
