Bryan Corbett

President and CEO, Managed Funds Association (MFA)

Bryan Corbett is MFA’s President and CEO. He is a veteran of Washington and Wall Street. For the past 12 years, he was a senior executive at The Carlyle Group, most recently as Managing Director in the Corporate Private Equity segment and Head of the firm’s OneCarlyle Global Investment Resources Group. In this role, Mr. Corbett and his team provided strategic and operational support to investment teams and portfolio companies across segments.

For the first half of his Carlyle tenure, Mr. Corbett managed U.S. government and regulatory issues affecting Carlyle, its investments, and the industry. In this role, he developed legislative and regulatory strategies relating to all of Carlyle’s business segments, including private equity, credit and real estate. In addition to serving on the boards of several Carlyle portfolio companies, Mr. Corbett started the firm’s global corporate citizenship program focused on responsible investing, published Carlyle’s inaugural corporate citizenship report, and started the firm’s initiative to recruit and place diverse individuals on portfolio company boards in the U.S.

Prior to joining Carlyle, Mr. Corbett served in the George W. Bush Administration as a Special Assistant to the President for Economic Policy and as the Senior Advisor to Deputy Secretary Robert Kimmitt at the Treasury Department. He also served as Majority Counsel on the Senate Banking Committee.

Mr. Corbett earned his JD from George Washington University Law School, where he was editor-in-chief of the George Washington Law Review, and earned his BA from University of Notre Dame.

Thomas Deinet

Executive Director, SBAI

Thomas Deinet was appointed Executive Director of the SBAI (previously known as the HFSB) in 2008. In 2007, Thomas joined the working group to project manage the development of practice standards proposed by 14 leading international alternative investment managers that led to the establishment of the SBAI.

Prior to joining the SBAI, he was a senior manager at Oliver Wyman, where he extensively worked with major financial institutions in Europe covering asset management as well as corporate and investment banking. Thomas also worked as an analyst in energy trading for a major commodities trading firm.

Thomas is a graduate of the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, with a major in industrial engineering and holds an MSc from Purdue University, USA. Thomas is a CFA charterholder.

Stuart Fiertz

Co-Founder, President and Director of Research, Cheyne Capital Management

Stuart Fiertz is the Co-Founder, President and Director of Research of Cheyne Capital. From 1991 to June 2000, and prior to establishing Cheyne Capital, Stuart worked for Morgan Stanley where he was responsible for the development and implementation of customised portfolio strategies and for credit research in the convertible bond management practice.

Prior to joining Morgan Stanley, Stuart was an equity research analyst for the Value Line Investment Survey, and a high yield credit analyst in Boston at Merrill Lynch and in New York at Lehman Brothers. Stuart is a CFA® charterholder and a CAIA designee. He is chairman of the Alternative Credit Council (ACC) and a Founder & Trustee of the Standards Board for Alternative Investments (SBAI). From 2014 until 2020, Stuart was also a council director of the Alternative Investment Management Association (AIMA) board.

Stuart has been awarded the CFA Certificate in ESG Investing. Stuart was educated at the International School of Geneva and at Dartmouth College where he was awarded a BA degree in Political Science and Economics.

Kathryn Graham

Non-Executive Director, Pension SuperFund

Kathryn has thirty years’ experience as a direct investor across multiple asset classes, managing complex multi-billion-pound portfolios. She has extensive expertise ranging from alternatives, private markets and derivatives through ESG and board governance. She currently holds non-executive board, investment committee and advisory positions for companies spanning pensions, fintech, private wealth and investment management.

Previously she was Head of Strategy Coordination at USS, which operates the largest pension scheme in the UK. Her team oversaw asset allocation, portfolio construction and manager selection as well as management of both the DB and DC sections. She is a former Director of BT Pension Scheme Management where her responsibilities included manager selection, liabilities and long-term investment strategies. She has also worked at Progressive Alternative Investments, SG Warburg and UBS.

Kathryn is currently an ambassador for the Diversity Project. She was previously a founding Trustee of the Standards Board for Alternative Investments and Chair of the London Board of 100 Women in Finance.

She holds a Masters in Economics and Mathematics from Edinburgh University.

David Harding

Founder and Executive Chair, Winton group

David Harding has been at the forefront of systematic investment management for more than 30 years. He has founded two successful investment management companies: the first, AHL, was sold to Man Group in 1994; he launched the second, Winton, in 1997.

A graduate of Cambridge University, David received a first-class Honours degree in natural sciences, specialising in theoretical physics.

David’s philanthropic interests focus on funding scientific research and the communication of scientific ideas. In February 2019, David’s foundation gave $130 million to Cambridge University, part of which funds the Harding Distinguished Postgraduate Scholars Programme. Other notable gifts include donations to the Cavendish Laboratory, the Max Planck Institute in Berlin and the Science Museum in London. David and his wife Claudia are signatories of the Giving Pledge, a commitment to give away more than half their wealth during their lifetimes.

David sits on the Advisory Board of the Royal Society, the University of Cambridge Development Board, and is an honorary Fellow of the Science Museum, and of St Catharine’s College, Cambridge.

Anna Harvey

Deputy Director, Personal Finances and Funds , HM Treasury

Anna is the Deputy Director for the Personal Finances and Funds team within the Financial Services Directorate in HM Treasury. The team oversees the government policy on financial inclusion and capability, consumer debt and consumer credit, alongside overseeing the government’s interests in the asset management sector.

Anna has worked in HMT since 2008. During this time she has held roles focused on financial services policy, as well as in fiscal and public spending policy.

Sir Andrew Large

Senior Advisor , Bermuda Monetary Authority

Sir Andrew Large was Chair of the Hedge Fund Working Group the forerunner to the SBAI. He remained a senior advisor to the SBAI until 2019. Sir Large is currently a Senior Advisor to Bermuda Monetary Authority, Vice Chairman to Financial Policy Council in Bermuda and Founding Partner for Systematic Policy Partnership.

He has held many senior roles including Deputy Governor for Financial Stability of the Bank of England (2002 - 2006), Deputy Chairman of Barclays Group (1998 - 2002), Chairman of Euroclear in Brussels (1996-2001) and Chairman of the UK’s supervisory authority, the Securities and Investments Board (SIB, a precursor of the FCA), (1992 - 1997). 

Sir Andrew has a keen interest in education; he is the first Chairman of the INSEAD Advisory Council (2011 -) and was a member of the INSEAD Board (1998 - 2010).

Sir Paul Marshall

CIO and Chairman, Marshall Wace

Sir Paul Marshall is CIO and Chairman of Marshall Wace LLP with $62bn in AUM. As CIO he has overall responsibility for investment strategy and performance and is the manager of the Eureka Fund.

He is a founding Trustee of Ark, the children’s charity, and Chairman of Ark Schools. Marshall served as Lead-Non-Executive Director at the UK Department for Education from 2013 to 2016.

In April 2015, he co-founded the Marshall Institute for Philanthropy and Social Entrepreneurship at LSE. Marshall was knighted in Her Majesty’s Birthday Honours’ list in June 2016 for services to education and philanthropy.

He holds an MBA from INSEAD Business School and a BA (Hons) from St John’s College, Oxford University.

Simon Ruddick

Chairman & Co-Founder, Albourne Partners

Simon Ruddick is the Chairman of Albourne Partners, having served as its CEO from the firm’s formation in March 1994 through to August 2015. Albourne's 300+ clients have over 650 billion dollars invested in alternative investments. Albourne was awarded the Queen's Award for Enterprise in 2006 and again in 2009. Simon has received Lifetime Achievement Awards from Global Custodian and Hedge Fund Review. Albourne has twice been ranked 1st in HFM Week’s Investor Power 30, the top most influential investors and advisors in the hedge fund space. In 2021, Albourne was named “Best Investment Consultant” at the inaugural 2021 Institutional Asset Manager (“IAM”) Awards.

Simon Ruddick served on the HFSB, and then SBAI, from July 2008 until September 2020 and is currently a trustee of OKRE, a charity that has recently been spun out of the Wellcome Trust.

Mario Therrien

SBAI Chair, Head of Investment Funds and External Management, CDPQ

Mario Therrien leads CDPQ’s investment funds activities. The teams he oversees invest in private investment funds and credit in private markets, as well as in venture capital in Québec and internationally. They are also responsible for external management in equity markets, as well as developing and managing strategic and institutional relationships. His mandate consists of adding value by building portfolios with the best external managers, while improving in-house management through the sharing of knowledge and expertise. He sits on the Investment-Risk Committee.

Prior to this role, Mr. Therrien was Senior Vice-President and Head of Strategic Partnerships, Developed Markets. He joined CDPQ in 1993 as an Analyst before taking on the role of Portfolio Manager in the group responsible for absolute return activities. Subsequently, he was mandated to develop external management activities in liquid-asset classes.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and a Master’s degree in Finance from Université de Sherbrooke. He has also completed the Canadian Securities Course given by the Canadian Securities Institute, and is a CFA charter holder.

Karl Wachter

General Counsel, Magnetar Capital (UK) LLP

Karl Wachter is the General Counsel of Magnetar Capital, a $13 billion multi-strategy hedge fund manager based in Evanston, Illinois, where he is a member of its Management and Operations Committees.

Prior to joining Magnetar in 2010, Karl served as General Counsel of hedge fund managers Amaranth Advisors and Diamond Lake Investment Group. Karl began his legal career in 1997 as an associate in the New York office of Clearly Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP.

Karl actively participates in industry associations, having served on the board of the Alternative Investment Management Association (AIMA) since 2014, and as its chairman since 2020. He is also a member of the regulatory committee of the Standards Board for Alternative Investments (SBAI).

Karl earned a J.D. with honors from the University of Chicago Law School, an M.A. from the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University and a B.F.A. with honors from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. He is a member of the New York bar.
